Message from the Chair

Close-up portrait of the Chair of the Orgreave Inquiry, Bishop Pete Wilcox, wearing a dark suit and clerical collar against a plain background.

As we marked the 42nd anniversary of Orgreave on 18 June, the Inquiry Team took time to reflect on its enduring significance. For many of our stakeholders, this is not simply a date in history, but an event whose distressing impact persists to this day. Observing the anniversary has strengthened our determination to get to the truth of what happened on that day and in the aftermath.

In that spirit, two members of the Inquiry Panel attended the Orgreave March and Rally in Sheffield on Saturday 13 June, to engage directly with those impacted by events 42 years ago. The Panel members spoke with attendees and distributed copies of the Inquiry booklet, which outlines our work and the ways in which people can engage with the process.

Panel members and I will also be present at the Durham Miners’ Gala on Saturday 11 July. You will find us in the large marquee where we will be available to speak with attendees and will be distributing copies of the booklet. We warmly encourage those present to come and speak with us.

These occasions are important opportunities for us to connect directly with individuals, to listen, and to share information about the Inquiry’s work. Later in the lifetime of the Inquiry, we plan to arrange listening events in various locations to hear directly from as many people as possible and further details will be published in the coming months.

However, whilst we welcome conversations, we are unable to accept physical evidence on these occasions. Information on how to share your story or formally submit evidence is available on our website and is also included in the Inquiry booklet mentioned above.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement as we move forward together with this important work.

Update On Initial Call for Evidence Scoping Exercise

Thank you to everyone who has responded to the Call for Evidence so far. We have received over one hundred submissions, and I am sincerely grateful to all those who have shared their experiences, often in difficult circumstances. The first-hand accounts are central to the Inquiry’s work.

Although our Initial Call for Evidence ended on 31 May, that ‘deadline’ was intended to help us gather early evidence to inform our initial List of Issues. It was not a final deadline. Evidence can be submitted to the Inquiry during its full evidence gathering phases, and everything shared with us will be considered with great care and respect.

We continue to encourage any individual or organisation, involved in or impacted by the events at Orgreave, or the aftermath, to come forward.

We recognise that doing so can be a significant step. The Inquiry is committed to approaching all those who engage with us with care, respect, and fairness. Your identity will not be published or disclosed without your consent.

Contact us at legal@orgreave.public-inquiry.uk us for information on how to make a submission.

What’s Coming Up

List of Issues

In the next few weeks, we expect to publish the first fruit of our work. It is called our ‘List of Issues’ and it consists of a detailed set of the questions which the Inquiry will attempt to answer in the months ahead.

The List of Issues expands on our Terms of Reference, which ask us to consider the planning undertaken by the police and government in the lead up to the day; events on the day itself and the immediate aftermath, including the public narrative which developed; and the subsequent charging decisions and prosecutions, relating to those arrested on the day or in connection with the day.

We have developed this List of Issues by carefully examining the material available to us so far. It will also drive our search for further evidence as we move forward.

The List of Issues will be available on the website in the coming weeks.
