An Opportunity to Share Your Experiences
Over the coming months, the Inquiry will hold community listening events in a number of locations.
You can choose whether to take part in a listening session and how you would like to participate.
These events are an opportunity for people who were involved in, or affected by, the events at Orgreave Coking Plant on 18 June 1984, to learn more about the Inquiry and, if they wish, share their experiences and perspectives.
Some events will be for the mining community and others for the policing community. Individuals and family members are welcome.
The purpose of these events is to help the Inquiry better understand the impact of events at Orgreave on individuals, families and communities.
Whatever your experience or perspective, you will be welcomed with respect and an open mind.
What is a Community Listening Event?
Community listening events will help the Inquiry understand the immediate and longer-term impact of the events at Orgreave on individuals, families and communities.
Attendees can learn more about the Inquiry, ask questions and, if they wish, share their experiences in a supportive and respectful environment.
You can take part in the way that feels right for you, including through:
- Group discussions.
- One-to-one conversations.
- Informal conversations with members of the Inquiry team.
- Attending to learn more about the Inquiry and its work.
Sharing Experiences and Providing Evidence
The events are not evidence-gathering sessions. What you share will not be treated as formal evidence or a witness statement, and you will not be challenged, questioned or cross-examined. The purpose is to listen, and to deepen our understanding of the human impact of what happened.
If you choose to share your experiences, your contribution will help inform the Inquiry’s work and final report. It will not be attributed to you; instead, the Inquiry will prepare an anonymised summary of the themes discussed.
Members of the Inquiry team will also be available throughout the session to answer questions about the Inquiry’s work. This will include members of the Inquiry legal team who will, if you wish, talk to you about how you can provide formal evidence to the Inquiry and who can assist you through that process after the event.
A Respectful and Supportive Environment
We recognise that people may bring different experiences, perspectives and memories.
We are committed to creating a safe, respectful and confidential environment, and we ask everyone attending to treat one another with courtesy and respect.
Independent wellbeing support will be available for anyone who may need it.
